Hard to believe the Free Press would run with negative stories.

Lamest bait job in DSR history?

Yes.

You really think it was THAT bad?

I think he knows the media around here well enough now and the games they play. He knew the angle that was going to be taken and just said "Fuck it. I'm not going to be nice to these people anymore because it makes no difference."

I don't think the old saying about how you can't beat the media so don't even try applies here. Agendas have been set, strategies have been made, and he is going to be a Free Press villain no matter. Why even be polite?

I do.

Only because he's done it more than once and, in this case, got completely burned on what he said.

Michigan should be on lockdown mode with the guy for now. Do not offer anything up. Do not lie. Just do what most coaches do and answer the questions and move on. He does not need to offer opinions and characterizations. It is clear that the Freep has some kind of bitch, but yesterday just gave reason for more to pile on. He's 8-16. There is no give here. A lot of news outlets are going to be looking to talk about the hotseat this year and the Freep will lead that charge. Just get the wins and shut up for now.

As I said yesterday, I will be stunned if he's not given a partial gag order when the new AD comes in. Why give them any extra shit to play with? Without knowing anything but what I've seen and read by other players/coaches, I happen to like the guy. I think his personality is mostly genuine on this stuff. I don't think he's all that slimy (relative to most other coaches, anyway). I do not care about his twang or that he doesn't sound like Carr. Like at all. I just want him to get through a positive year and don't want him to shoot himself in the foot anymore.

But, for over a year now, I've heard Mikey "Assclown" Valentine" and multiple friends who went to State (and do not know each other) say the guy oddly reminds them of John L. He just doesn't seem to get it when it comes to handling the media. Obviously two very different coaches (insert joke about both of their records here), but I think there is a point to that when talking about handling the media.

Wasn't trying to bait anybody Bo.

I had no idea the 2nd article would be ignored. Honestly.

I assumed that you or Nick or Greg[g] or BM would be excited about that kid.

Because I would be if I were a Michigan fan.

Such a terrible fucking lying racist.

Just awful.

BMark.

Why is his handling of the media such a big deal? Bo raises a good point. He is never going to win with some members of the media. I bet even when he does win there will be plenty of people saying he won by recruiting thugs, or that he practices his players too hard.

At this point nothing matters but the results of the investigation and the wins and losses.

Maybe I am wrong then. I don't know. My guess is that there are some people in the AD who are pissed off about what happened this week. Not to mention that I have to think this kind of stuff puts a strain on RR and/or the other coaches. That much was proven last year when he would get riled up about this kind of stuff. It's not just the losing that gets to people (though that is obviously the biggest thing). When everyone is gunning for you and looking for an angle, it's just easier to be honest or not to say anything. That is my only point.

Handling the media is pretty easy. Just answer the questions and move on. If he says, "We are aware of what happened with him when he was younger, we have thoroughly evaluated the player and think he can be an asset to our team despite those things" I think that'd be plenty.

If the Freep wanted to run with front page story today despite that, they'd look like odd child-stalkers. Instead, RR looks bad and so does Michigan. Most people acknowledge that the story went too far, but that it wasn't inaccurate at all an that RR pretty much lied to everyone.

Lying to protect a 17 year old kid, who just committed to your program.

What an awful guy that RR is?

Everything you don't like about RR, I do.

Fuck the media and having to hold back.

He is not there for the media. He is there for his players and the university.

Greg[g], I have no problem with him trying to protect his players. What is wrong with you? Lloyd did it all the time and it never made the papers because he was good at it and the media wasn't looking for dirty laundry every other day.

My point was based on the entirety of the situation that RR is in right now.

It had nothing to do with the principle. A quieter Michigan is a better one right now. They will get the announcement soon on the investigation and then hopefully can go into spring practice with a good year ahead.

One of Lloyd's recruits would go to girls house's on campus, look in the windows, and jerk off. Multiple times. The media made way less of that than Dorsey.

Hopefully they find a way to win 8-9 games this year and the stuff starts to die.

I interviewed one of Ron Zook's Florida era "hostesses" for a job yesterday.

She was hot. But NOT very bright.

Larry Harrison was a fine individual. Dude just liked porches.

Steve - I'd be interested to hear what she said about it. I'm assuming she's not going to be talking about blowing recruits or anything, but she must have mentioned the experience for you to know about it, right?

Zook was a great recruiter too. He didn't tell anybody he'd die for them or that God wanted him to coach them though, at least not to my knowledge.

I totally forgot about Larry Harrison. The shitstorm would be unbelievable if that was an RR recruit.

I disagree with Parks' premise that the scrutiny is just due to the losing. Rosenberg wrote his first hit piece before RR ever coached a game. After his first game, a 2-point loss to a Utah team that would go undefeated, Rosenberg came out the next day and basically said they would have won if Carr was coaching.

RR is fighting provincial sentiment and/or snobbery and has been since day one. People in this area are fucking morons.

Ha, that's insane. I mean... I can see being part of a "pride" organization as having stuff you can allude to as being helpful, but a hostess? You've got tot be kidding me... man.

FWIW, Wojo had a good take on Dorsey the other day:

http://detroitnews.com/article/20100206/OPINION03/2060417/1131/sports0201/Rich-Rodriguez-takes-a-risk-on-Demar-Dorsey--but-it-s-part-of-the-game

EDIT: Figured being the slappy I'd add this on:

Michael Spath of TheWolverine.com:

Quote:
Asked if [Demar's coach] could help us out in getting a hold of Demar for a bio in the magazine, he told us it wasn't likely going to happen because of his last interaction with a newspaper from up here.

"They told him they were writing a redemption story and the kid is 100 percent honest in every answer and then they blasted him. His mother was so upset and won't let him talk to anyone again."

Bo...I don't believe I said it was due to losing. What I said is that it's happening because of the allegiance certain writers have towards Carr. Just like you just commented on Rosenberg's statement about the Utah loss.

I also said that if Les Miles had gotten the job, and had a similar record to RR, he would NOT being taking the shit that RR is.

I did say that if he'd STOP losing, the backlash would stop or at least subside.

It's common knowledge that Carr hates Miles and did everything in his power to block his getting hired (I didn't like the action but didn't necessarily mind the result).

So I don't think writers with allegiances toward Carr would be taking it easy on him.

I think it's fair to say that Angelique Chengelis offsets some of the negative Free Press stuff.

I realize she's the beat writer but I can't recall her ever writting anything but sunshine and roses.

Chengelis's positivity might spawn an NCAA investigation.

"Offsets some of the negative Freep stuff" - what an idiot! She delivers the standard fluff enjoyed by virtually every program in every market. It doesn't mean a thing.

"Negative" is not the best word to describe the Freep's crusade. Maybe if it was just reserved for columns. But they are making a concerted effort to damage people while spitting in the eye of journalistic ethics. They are lying to 18-year-olds who just joined the program about why they are interviewing them, spinning it, and turning it into front-page scandals.

If there is a precedent for a media outlet's agenda running this deep in the world of local sports coverage - ANYWHERE, EVER - I would like to see it.

This.

I think it's pretty well accepted she's a beat writer and does these type of reports.

This post is not intended to be funny.

I love wings.

Boneless from BW3 with Mango Habenero sauce.

Or the Medium sauce - that's good too.

I've spent a few Saturday parked on a stool at BW3 watching Michigan lose while enjoying some wings and beers.

Sorry Bill, but IMO, boneless wings are nothing more than pressed breast meat and a poor imitation to a classic original, kind of like comparing new Coke from the 80's or whenever that was to classic Coke.

I like the boneless wings because I don't like seeing that fat attached to the bone and I don't like choking on small parts of the bone.

I care less about the wings than I do the sauces though.

Wings at most places aren't very good. I like about 4 or 5 of the sauces at BW3 though.

Wow.

That's.

Wow.

That might be THE WORST effort anybody has ever put forth on this website.

Brang isn't very strong with the insults.

That was pretty brutal to see.

I don't know what you expect.

It's Greg[g].

I have nothing to work with. He doesn't even make sense.

And you have to admit that was a BRUTAL effort by Brang.

That sounded like some shit a 6th grader would throw around.

My main issue with your stuff with Greg[g] is that it is INCREDIBLY repetitive.

Brungs' post wasn't great, but at least it was succinct and not a repeat.

Much like Greg[g] at an orgy in college it goes both ways.

As long as he's going to continue to lie and twist things I'm going to continue to call him on it.

He's a trainwreck now.

And I'm a little stubborn sometimes and I don't quit easily.

Might have something to do with being Irish Catholic.

Listen, I am not even telling you two to stop.

I am just giving my opinion that it is horrible.

My sister even commented how awful the back and forth has become.

So Bill, if you want any chance with my sister, you might want to tone it down.
